According to available findings about exercise induced change in immune system, the present study was conducted to determine the effect of acute two different intensities (moderate and relative intense) exercise on immune system in young active and inactive men.
The study was done into quasi-experimental pre-post design in ten young active healthy men (aged 21.2±1.2 years, body fat 12.4±2.7% and VO2max 59.63±2.15ml/kg/min) and ten young non-active healthy men (aged 21.0±1.1 years, body fat 16.7% ± 1.2 and VO2max 45.0±5.8 ml/kg/min). One week after preliminary measuring, all subjects participated in an acute moderate cycling protocol (45 min with 50% VO2max) and one week after, all subjects participated in an acute relative intense cycling exercise (15 min with 70% VO2max). Blood samples were drawn from an antecubital vein immediately before and after the exercise. The complete blood cell counts were determined by automatic blood analyzer. Serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), and C-reactive protein (CRP) along with plasma stress hormones (cortisol and epinephrine) were analyzed using ELISA kits. Data were analyzed by paired t-test and Pearson's correlation test at α< 0,05.
The results were demonstrated that total and differential circulating leukocytes counts and serum IL-6, IL-10 and CRP concentrations along with plasma epinephrine and cortisol levels were increased immediately after the acute moderate cycling exercise (p<0,01) and increased with severe cycling exercise (p<0,001). Furthermore, the positive correlation between the post-exercise total leukocyte counts and serum IL-10 was significant (p=0,011).But, the correlations between the exercise-induced reduction of fasting blood glucose and total leukocytes counts with serum CRP and IL-6 after exercise were not significant (p>0,05).
The small exercise induced elevation of immune system component suggests that the intensity or duration of the acute moderate cycling may not have been sufficient to induce a immunological response in young active and inactive men. Therefore, it be concluded that the moderate exercise for 45 min and relative intense cycling exercise for 15 min appears to be safe from an immunological point of view but if done severely must be done lesser time (less than 15 min).
